Lab Assistant

Position Summary:
The Whitehead Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking a lab assistant to help in a project aimed at understanding the chemical mechanisms of interactions between plants and their insect herbivores. The lab assistant will maintain insect colonies, assist with greenhouse and field experiments, and conduct chemical analyses of plant material using techniques such as GC/MS and HPLC . Other general duties may include ordering and organizing lab supplies, data management, and helping other group members with experiments as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
- Considerable laboratory experience in biology, chemistry or a related field.
- Experience maintaining insects in research colonies.
- Basic knowledge of computer programs such as Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- B.S. or B.A. in biology, chemistry, ecology, or a related discipline or equivalent training and/or experience.
- Experience with analytical chemistry techniques including GC/MS and HPLC .
- Experience maintaining greenhouse plants or conducting field experiments with plants.
- Knowledge of statistics and data analysis in R coding environment.
