Duties and Responsibilities
The Division of Infectious Diseases at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago is searching for a nationally renowned physician-scientist for the position of Division Director. The Division Director provides leadership for all aspects of the Infectious Disease Division including clinical service, teaching and research. The incumbent will be responsible for recruitment and retention of clinical and basic science faculty and will serve as a mentor to all division faculty, as well as leading initiatives to promote clinical quality, academic and clinical productivity and enhancement of patient satisfaction. The Division Director will work closely with the Department of Medicine leadership to develop and implement strategic plans and Loyola University Hospital Administration to create efficient clinical services that deliver compassionate and evidence-based care for patients requiring infectious diseases consultation. The Division Director will build a management culture based on teamwork, open communication, prudent risk taking, innovation and accountability.
The Division Director will take a leadership role in the Infectious Diseases-Immunology Research Institute to build on already strong affiliations with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Through thematic expansion of basic and translational research, the Division Director will oversee growth of a research enterprise that encompasses virology, eukaryotic pathogens, bacteriology, clinical outcomes in immunocompromised individuals, global health, parasitology and fungal pathogenesis.
In collaboration with the Department of Public Health Sciences, the Division Director will expand infectious diseases research and education to broader public health and international programs. The Division Director will also assure that these missions are fulfilled through programmatic integration of PharmD and Advanced Practice Nursing staff in an environment that fosters continuing medical education and training of Infectious Diseases fellows.

The Division Director will assure that clinical faculty within the Division provide:
Primary care for patients with HIV / AIDS and related medical conditions
Consultative care for patients with community-acquired and hospital-acquired infections and multidrug resistant infections, including those caused by MRSA and gram-negative bacteria
Consultative care for patients with infectious diseases associated with stem cell and solid organ transplantation and hematological and other malignancies
Reduction and elimination of infections associated with hospitalization through surveillance, prevention, education and interventional strategies
Increased effectiveness of hospital-based antimicrobial therapy through review and oversight of treatment strategies, education and collaboration, to provide cost-effective treatment and reduce emergence of treatment-induced antibiotic resistance
Travel medicine recommendations and consultations

In the area of quality, the Division Director will take an active role in quality improvement and assurance activities and projects of high quality cost-effective care. This would include development and review of quality improvement plans, leading regular multi-disciplinary meetings to review and analyze outcomes, and continuous quality improvements for operations.

From an operations perspective, the Division Director will work closely with his/her administrator to:
Provide for meaningful faculty and academic staff development.
Coordinate special projects that could address administrative, academic, clinical and training initiatives.
Participate in the development of division strategic plans, both short and long term as well as working with the Chairman s office on financial and workload strategies.
Assess and provide annual RVU projections by physician as well as outpatient visits by location.

Minimum requirements for consideration include:
Board certification in Infectious Diseases from the American Board of Internal Medicine
Academic and scholarly accomplishments to qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Tenure Track at Loyola University School of Medicine
A national reputation in research, supported by a portfolio of extramural funding, participation on NIH Study Sections, editorial board appointments or other national and international honors
A track record of training medical students, residents and fellows
Mentorship of postgraduate fellows and junior faculty toward career success in academic medicine
A minimum of 5 years of administrative experience with clinical and/or research programs
Experience as a consulting Infectious Diseases specialist in a tertiary care academic medical center

Based in the western suburbs of Chicago, Loyola University Health System is a quaternary care system with a 61-acre main medical center campus and 22 primary and specialty care facilities in Cook, Will, and DuPage counties. The medical center campus is conveniently located in Maywood, 13 miles west of the Chicago Loop and 8 miles east of Oak Brook, Ill. The heart of the medical center campus, Loyola University Hospital, is a 570 licensed bed facility currently undergoing a significant expansion project. It houses a Level 1 Trauma Center, a Burn Center and the Ronald McDonald Children s Hospital of Loyola University Medical Center. Also on campus are the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, Loyola Outpatient Center, Center for Heart & Vascular Medicine and Loyola Oral Health Center as well as the LUC Stritch School of Medicine, the LUC Niehoff School of Nursing and the Loyola Center for Health & Fitness.
For decades, Loyola University Medical Center has had a close partnership with Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. Loyola s campus in Maywood, Il. lies immediately east of Hines campus. Most faculty members of Loyola s Stritch School of Medicine have joint appointments at Hines, and Loyola students and resident physicians rotate through Hines as part of their training. Researchers from Loyola and Hines have collaborated closely on many federally funded studies.
