Learning Specialist

Position Summary:
The Learning Specialist will work with colleagues in Student Athlete Academic Support Services ( SAASS ) to meet the academic support needs of student athletes. Specifically, the Learning Specialist will work in conjunction with the coordinator of the SAASS Learning Assistance Program to design and implement academic coaching and support services for student athletes with disabilities and other learning differences. In this capacity, the Learning Specialist will:
• Provide intensive academic support, learning assistance, and academic coaching to student athletes;
• Assist with the implementation of strategic tutoring for the Learning Assistance Program;
• Provide training on the use of supplemental technology for the Learning Assistance Program.
• Provide consistent and frequent feedback to Academic Coordinators on the academic achievement and progress of student athletes who utilize LAP services.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Student Athlete Academic Support Services.

Required Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Special Education, Education or related field or a combination of experience working with K-12 students with disabilities or college students with specific emphasis on academic support with Reading will also be considered in place of a Master's degree;
• Experience working with students experiencing academic challenges including for any reason, but not limited to , a diagnosed learning disability, Attention Deficit Disorder, a lack of preparation, skills or motivation;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds;
• Strong communication and computer skills;
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information with discretion and according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA ) guidelines;
• Ability to work some evenings and weekends to fulfill professional responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Education Specialist degree in Special education, Education, or a related field;
• Considerable experience working with at-risk students in a collegiate environment;
• K-12 teaching experience;
• State certification in; reading, Special education, or K-12 education;
• Experience working with student athletes in a NCAA Division I environment.
