Position Summary:
The Office for Inclusion and Diversity at Virginia Tech invites applications for one-year (potentially renewable up to one additional year) postdoctoral teaching fellow positions (up to 3). The positions begin August 2018.
The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester addressing the Critical Analysis of Equity and Identity in the United States requirement of the Pathways General Education curriculum, in departments reflective of the candidate's training and expertise, and will work with those departments to develop and/or revise relevant courses and curricula. While social science and humanities departments are central to meeting this requirement, other departments are exploring opportunities to offer courses relevant to this area as well. Candidates outside of the social sciences and humanities with relevant expertise will therefore be considered.
The requirement includes courses exploring the ways social identities related to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, class, disability status, sexual orientation, religion, veteran status, economic status, age, and other socially salient categories and statuses, influence the human condition and experience, with focus on the United States in particular or in comparative perspective. Courses will help students gain self-awareness of how they are situated relative to those around them based on social identities, and should confer foundational knowledge of the interactive dynamics of social identities, power and inequity. Perspectives stressing the interaction of social location and identities, such as intersectionality, or addressing inequality, place, and space, are especially desirable. Compensation will be commensurate with salaries typical for postdoctoral fellows in the candidates' field(s). Health insurance benefits will be included. Based upon departmental interest and the availability of faculty lines, some fellows may be considered for transition to employment as tenure track or collegiate faculty upon the conclusion of the fellowship period.

Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree completed prior to August 2018.
Expertise appropriate to offering courses addressing issues of diversity and equity in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching courses related to diversity issues.
Experience engaging diverse communities and/or mentoring underrepresented students.
