Assistant Director, Public Relations - Department of Communications and Marketi

Tufts University Public Relations (based on campuses in Medford-Somerville, Boston and Grafton) communicates the excellence of Tufts University, its schools, faculty, students, and accomplishments to the public via the news media. Public Relations staff members seek and develop opportunities for Tufts leaders, faculty, students, research, and projects to appear in the print, broadcast, and electronic media around the world, while also responding to all incoming media inquiries. Public Relations staff members also provide counsel to faculty and administrators on a variety of potentially sensitive issues. Through the efforts of the Public Relations department, the University communicates its contributions to its various constituencies and enhances its global reputation.

The Assistant Director of Public Relations reports to the Deputy Director of Public Relations on the Boston campus and is part of a central administration team that manages and carries out public relations for the University, and its schools and divisions. This position focuses on public relations for the Boston Health Sciences campus with a particular focus on science and research communications. S/he pitches stories to reporters, editors, producers and columnists, including top-tier national and international media, regional media and trade publications. S/he evaluates and responds to media requests; writes and edits press releases, fact sheets, etc.; and participates in the development and execution of public relations strategy. The Assistant Director also provides advice and expertise to faculty, deans and administrators on public relations issues and concerns.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor s degree and minimum of 5 years of related or equivalent work experience.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft office, PowerPoint, Paint or Photoshop.
  • Excellent judgment and news sense.
  • Strong research, writing, editing, verbal, organizational, analytical skills and skill with scientific subject matter are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education, life sciences or medicine/health care/nutrition.
  • Experience in multimedia.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Occasional travel to professional events; occasional travel among Tufts campuses; irregular hours as driven by news cycle; occasional evening or weekend work.
