Applications received subsequent to second consideration date (January 29, 2018) may not be given full consideration. __________________________________________ The position will be an academic year appointment with an expected start date of September, 2018. The Graduate School of Oceanography ( GSO ) at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor. We seek applicants addressing high impact topics across the spectrum of oceanographic disciplines and research topics. Preference will be given to researchers intending to utilize or develop novel platforms, sensors and algorithms in observational field programs in their research area. Potential areas of specialization include but are not limited to marine robotics, autonomous platforms, in-situ sensor development and applications of real- time data processing such as adaptive sampling, path planning, pattern recognition and automated classification. The new hire will have the unique opportunity to participate in the active sea-going community of GSO and the Ocean Exploration Trust utilizing platforms such as R/V Endeavor and E/V Nautilus for research and technical development. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with the Ocean Engineering Department and the College of Engineering which has recently developed a Robotic Engineering Minor.. In general, we invite individuals with a strong commitment to research, teaching, and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to outreach activities through the URI Inner Space Center and ship-to-shore telepresence. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the graduate programs (M.S. and Ph.D.) by advising students specializing in his/her area of study. Basic Function: Develop an externally funded research program, teach graduate and undergraduate classes and support public engagement. QUALIFICATIONS Required: 1. A Ph.D. or equivalent by the time of appointment date in either oceanography, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or related fields in chemistry, biology, geology or physics. 2. Demonstrated record of using or developing novel instrument platforms, sensors, or software for marine observations as shown by publications, presentations at scientific meetings, honors, patents, and/or awards. 3. Demonstrated ability to develop an independently funded research program as shown by research statement or previously funded grants and/or awards. 4. Demonstrated strong oral communication skills. 5. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills. 6. Demonstrated research strengths and teaching ability that complement existing programs and foci at GSO and in related colleges such as Engineering and Environmental Life Sciences. 7. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations. Preferred: 1. Demonstrated interest and experience in field research. 2. Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary collaborations. 3. Demonstrated teaching and/or mentoring experience. 4. Demonstrated post PhD academic or industry research experience. 5. Demonstrated previous success with research funding.
