Instructor, Communication Studies & Dir. of Individual Events

Position Description:

The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Communication Studies seeks applications for a term appointment (three-year minimum, four-year maximum) as Instructor of Communication Studies and Director of Individual Events beginning August 2018. Duties of this position include teaching responsibilities for nine credit hours per semester, which typically includes introductory and mid-level courses that serve department needs (see UNI Communication Department Studies website for full list of course offerings). The successful candidate also will direct the Individual Events (IE) Squad in the UNI Forensics Program. The responsibilities of the Director of IE include: coaching students who compete on the IE squad; working with forensics graduate assistants assigned to the program; coordinating with the Director of Forensics and forensics graduate assistants to staff and operate the Individual Events Program; hosting tournaments; developing and monitoring an annual budget for the IE Program and reporting expenditures; travelling with the IE Squad to tournaments (typically 10-15 trips annually); recruiting undergraduate competitors and graduate student assistant coaches; assisting with fundraising for the program; coordinating with the Director of Debate on forensic activities; serving the larger forensics community; and judging at tournaments. As the primary person responsible for coaching the IE Squad, the Director of IE is expected to conduct weekly squad meetings and hold weekly group and individual coaching sessions. As a Communication Studies faculty member, the successful candidate will participate in the department's curriculum and contribute to an educationally sound and competitively successful forensics program.

Education Requirements:

M.A. in Communication Studies or related curriculum required.

Required Qualifications:

Additional requirements include demonstrated effectiveness during a minimum of three years of intercollegiate individual events coaching; demonstrated teaching effectiveness in introductory and mid-level communication courses; and an ability to travel.

Desirable Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with Ph.D. or MFA.
