Statistics Undergraduate Advisor

Position Summary:
Undergraduate Advisor serves as the primary advisor for Statistics majors, Statistics minors, Actuarial Sciences minors, and works with students to ensure they are taking the appropriate classes, meeting deadlines, and are on track for their intended graduation date. The advisor helps students find internships and ultimately jobs, fellowships, scholarships, and undergraduate research opportunities, while helping students navigate VT through both stressful and exciting times. The advisor recruits and evaluates new students to all programs; helps organize recruiting efforts; meets with prospective students and families (e.g., Open House, Hokie Focus, Hokie Preview, campus visits, etc.); advises new students during Summer Orientation; holds information sessions for current VT students interested in these programs; maintains and monitors student demographic and academic databases for these programs; assesses student progress toward degree; works with other advisors, both in and out of the College of Science, to advise students with multiple majors and/or minors; and works with the Department of Statistics undergraduate faculty and department head to implement current student curriculum and assessment plans and to develop and implement new curriculum and assessment metrics as necessary.
The Department of Statistics intends to grow our undergraduate major population, while simultaneously working to improve the quality of students who enter and remain in the program. The academic advisor will play a pivotal role in helping the department reach these goals of the undergraduate program.

Required Qualifications:
- Experience such as advising undergraduate students.
- Experience recruiting students to undergraduate programs.
- Experience such as assessing and/or providing support to undergraduate programs.
- Proficient in software such as Microsoft Office.
- Must be able to interact comfortably with all individuals from a diverse multicultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using Banner and HokieSpa to manage student schedules and information.
- Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
