Business Manager

Position Summary:
The Business Manager is responsible for planning, allocation, and monitoring of all English department funds; assisting the department chair in drafting the department operating budget each fiscal year; and performing monthly reconciliations, preparing reports to ensure spending is on track with initial projections, and making adjustments as necessary. This position is also in charge of management of purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel, and coordination of departmental and program speakers' travel and expenses; maintaining financial records; working with sponsored programs on external research funding; and providing backup assistance to the executive administrative assistant with general administration and new hires.

Required Qualifications:
- Considerable experience in business administration, accounting, finance or related field or equivalent level of education, training, and/or certifications.
- Experience working with computerized accounting software and human resources information software.
- Experience such as managing financial records, account reconciliation, travel reimbursements, and payroll.
- Demonstrated knowledge such as bookkeeping and accounting principles and payroll and audit procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, and the ability to work in a complex environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy in a deadline oriented environment and within policy and budgetary limits.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in an academic environment.
- Experience working with faculty and graduate students on complex financial needs.
- Knowledge of University and State fiscal policies and procedures.
- Experience with Banner Finance, TEM , and HokieMart purchasing.
