Associate Research Physicist (EAST)

Requisition # 2017-8088
Department PPPL ITER and Tokamaks
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

The Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory, a world-leading fusion energy research center under contract with the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking applications for a full time Associate Research Physicist ( post-doctoral position) on integrated modeling, interpretive analysis and experimental validation focused on the EAST tokamak, located in Hefei (People's Republic of China). The position is located in Princeton, NJ.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to the research on access and optimization of steady-state operation on the EAST tokamak. Time-dependent equilibrium and transport solvers, like TRANSP, will be used in conjunction with advanced models for heating and current drive (GENRAY, CQL3D, NUBEAM) to understand the synergy of the external systems on the evolution of the current and pressure profiles. It is expected that the candidate will actively participate into the experimental campaign and propose experiments of high impact on the EAST program, which contribute to the advancement of the physics understanding of long pulse operation. Implementation of reduced models for MHD stability in the TRANSP simulations is also part of this research, and these models will be used to analyze existing experiments and to design experiments with improved stability and optimized performance.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist and a team worker who will collaborate closely with the EAST team. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in plasma physics. Should have demonstrated experience in dealing both with data analysis and experimental interpretation. Familiarity with time-dependent simulations and MHD stability analysis is highly desirable. This position involves traveling to the EAST facility, including extended stays.
