Associate Research Physicist (JET)

Requisition # 2017-8087
Department PPPL ITER and Tokamaks
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

The Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory, a world-leading fusion energy research center under contract with the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking applications for a full time Associate Research Physicist ( post-doctoral position) integrated tokamak modeling, interpretive analysis and experimental validation focused on the JET tokamak, located in Oxford, U.K. This position is located in Princeton, NJ.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will use time-dependent transport solvers, like TRANSP, to analyze and design experiments in preparation to the DT campaign on JET.

Focus will be on the physics of Neoclassical Tearing Modes and their effect on confinement degradation, including NTM-induced fast-ion transport and the interplay between impurity accumulation and NTM dynamics. Part of the research activity includes the implementation and validation of reduced NTM transport models in the TRANSP code, which are critical to the success of the project.

The successful candidate will perform integrated modeling of experimental discharges to inform the JET team on how to best use the available heating and current drive sources to enable access to H-mode with low impurity accumulation and to tailor the current profile for access to hybrid operation with reduced MHD activity and reduced energetic particle transport for projected DT scenarios.

It is expected that the candidate will actively participate in the experimental DT campaign on JET as an active member of the team, contribute to the integrated tokamak modeling activity, including interpretive analysis and experimental validation.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in plasma physics. Be highly motivated scientist and a team worker who will collaborate closely with the JET team. Applicants should have demonstrated experience on experimental data analysis, possibly including comparison with predictions from time-dependent simulation codes such as TRANSP. Familiarity with time-dependent simulations and/or with the JET experiment is highly desirable. This position involves frequent traveling to the JET facility and/or extended stays at JET.
