Princeton University seeks nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). Princeton University manages and operates PPPL under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and funding for the Laboratory comes primarily from the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences within the DOE Office of Science. As one of the 10 National Laboratories owned by the DOE Office of Science, PPPL employs a staff of approximately 500 to conduct the nation's leading program in plasma science and fusion energy research.

Responsibilities

Reporting to, and working in close coordination with the Princeton University Vice President (VP) for PPPL, the Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the Laboratory, including the performance of PPPL in science, engineering, operations, project management, and strategic planning. The Director is responsible for leading the Laboratory's scientific and technical programs in fusion energy science and technology, as well as broader investigations in plasma science, and provides leadership to the U.S. and world fusion energy efforts. The Director works closely with the DOE on developing and maintaining the vision and future planning for the Laboratory and is responsible for ensuring that the Laboratory provides the best possible quality and value for its customer, while maintaining DOE's highest standards for safe, efficient and compliant operations. Important additional responsibilities are to broaden the research and funding base for the Laboratory and support opportunities for collaborative research and other activities between PPPL and the Princeton University main campus.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess a Ph.D. in science and/or engineering and at least 15 years of exemplary, senior-level leadership in a scientific R&D environment. This executive is likely to have a background in magnetic fusion, plasma physics and/or large experimental physics areas, with established scientific and/or engineering credentials. He/She will understand the national laboratory system, major university science and technology research, and the federal government's relationships with its highly technical major contractors—IRAD programs, Contract R&D (CRAD) opportunities, and outside research partnerships. The ability to communicate effectively with staff, researchers, government officials, and the press is essential.

Instructions for Applying:

Initial screening of applicants will begin immediately, and continue until the position is filled. PPPL will be assisted by Patrick Gray, J.J. Cutler, and Randy Jayne of Heidrick & Struggles, Inc. Nominations and applications, including a CV and a cover letter, should be directed to: PPPL-Director@heidrick.com.
