Overview

The Laboratory Animal Resource (LAR) group at Princeton University is a centralized administrative department reporting to the Dean for Research and is responsible for animal and veterinary care of all research animals at Princeton University. The Rodent Breeding Technician provides support in all Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) Facilities. This position reports directly to the LAR Staff Veterinarian.



The Rodent Breeding Technician performs the following duties, under the supervision and/or direction of LAR veterinarians: perform day-to-day assessement and maintenance of rodent colonies and breeding lines for continuity, time-mating of mice, genotyping, and other related responsibilities for maintenance of transgenic rodent colonies. The Rodent Breeding Technician must have knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in transgenic rodent colony maintenance and breeding.

Responsibilities

Rodent Breeding and Colony Management



Colony management, care and breeding, as directed by the investigator or veterinarian. Management includes, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Setting up breeding cages
    • Creating appropriate cage cards
    • Start/stop matings as requested
    • Monitor pregnancies
    • Wean and sexing of rodents
    • Genotyping (tail tip biopsy or ear punch for DNA)
    • Interpretation of genotype results.
    • Preparation of samples for shipment for genotype analysis.
    • Apply appropriate identification
      • Eartag
      • Ear notch
      • Tattoo
  • Correct identification of all animals.
  • Recording of births.
  • Weaning and other associated procedures, such as sexing, genotyping, and identification (e.g., eartagging, ear notching, tattooing).
  • Collect samples, including tail tips or ear punch, for DNA for genotyping. Store samples appropriately and deliver to labs or submit directly for analysis to outside laboratories.
  • Effectively communicates progress within transgenic colonies to laboratory personnel.
  • Conduct procedures, including blood collection, tail vein injection, administration of substances, etc.
  • Record pedigree, births, deaths, # weaned and other data electronically.
  • Collect other samples or measurements as directed.
  • Ensure that sufficient supplies and equipment are ordered to support activities.
  • Keep detailed time and procedure records for billing purposes.
  • Maintain strict infection control procedures.



Clinical Rodent Care - the Rodent Breeding Technician may assist the Veterinary Technicians with the following duties related to veterinary care:
  • Perform card rounds and assessment of clinically ill or injured rodents.
  • Maintain clinical logs for all species.
  • Notify laboratory personnel regarding problem and recommend plan of action.
  • Provides animal treatments as instructed by the veterinarian.
  • Write up records and close clinical cases.
  • Perform rodent necropsies, as requested by the veterinarian.
  • Perform euthanasia, as requested by the veterinarian.
  • Other duties as directed by the veterinarian.



Compliance and Quality Assurance
  • Monitors mandatory documentation maintained by researchers (e.g., post-operative monitoring, weight logs) for the Attending Veterinarian.
  • Contributes to the preventative animal health program and health surveillance program as needed.
  • Performs specimen collection and documentation.
  • Processing of samples.
  • Reviews all health reports for incoming animals from approved vendors and conducting intake checks on all USDA-regulated species.
  • Develops, documents, and as needed, provides the environmental enrichment programs for all laboratory animals, in particular the enrichment program for the non-human primates (in collaboration with the Principal Investigators (PIs) and LAR Operations).
  • Ensures that drugs and supplies are not out of date. Assists LAR Management with performing monthly audits of LAR facilities.
  • Ensures that appropriate safety protocols are followed when hazardous materials are used in connection with research animals.


Other Duties As Assigned by the Staff Veterinarian
  • Perform or assist with the shipping and receiving of animals imported/exported from non-commercial sources.
  • Scheduling of equipment maintenance, to ensure that equipment is functioning properly and to remain in compliance with regulations and guidelines.
  • Enters data accurately and timely into the electronic management systems, order and service request forms, veterinary logs, vivarium calendar, and time reporting system.
  • Performs Special Service Requests, as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Provide technical skills training to the research community in support of IACUC-approved research protocols (e.g., animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail biopsies, etc.).
  • Exhibit a willingness to assume additional responsibilities and increase knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Animal Science or related field and/or AALAS certification.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working with transgenic rodent colonies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a laboratory animal resources team and ability to share knowledge with other animal care staff, students, and new researchers.
  • Proven ability to work independently and communicate well at different levels within the organization, and work well with a diverse team for a common goal consistent with the mission of the Laboratory Animal Resources Department.
  • Ability to comfortably lift 50 lbs.
  • Stand or walk continuously up to 6 hours per day.
  • Sit for up to 2 hours per day.
  • Lift or carry up to 20 pounds frequently (up to 500 times per day) and up to 50 pounds occasionally (up to 100 times per day).
  • Push or pull using forces up to 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the work day), and using forces up to 100 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the work day).
  • Use hands for simple grasping, pushing or pulling, and fine manipulations constantly (more than 500 per day).
  • Kneel, bend, squat, and reach overhead. Lift overhead, or push or pull frequently (34-66% of the work day).
  • Kneel, stand, and lie down, crawl or climb step tools or 6-foot stepladders occasionally (less than 33% of the work day).
  • Lift up to 50 pounds in a range of motions from floor to shoulder height.
  • Lift up to 20 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead.
  • Work in a controlled laboratory environment under a variety of temperature and humidity conditions.
  • Possess ability to maintain balance, a full range of body motions, and physical agility.
  • Work attendance during scheduled or unscheduled work closures due to emergencies, events or other situations. The Rodent Breeding Technician is considered essential services staff. Essential services staff performs jobs that are necessary and required to maintain basic University operations.
  • Perform on-call duties during scheduled weekend, holiday, or work closures.
  • Ability to handle assignments and changing priorities as circumstances may dictate.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate well person to person as well as email.
  • Ability to follow-up tasks from beginning to completion and carry out duties in accordance to supervisor deadlines and university policies.
  • Work successfully in a team environment and accept constructive criticism willingly and make corresponding changes.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Applications including Outlook, Excel, and other software applications used in animal research.
  • Preserve confidential information and not disclose contents of this information except in the performance of the work assignment and in accordance with University and departmental policies and procedures.
