Group Leader, Lighting Infrastructure Technology

Position Summary:
Serves as the technical specialist and mentor for the Lighting and Infrastructure Technology Group in the measurement and application of light in outdoor environments. Leads the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for investigation of light and its impact on humans, safety, and the environment. Keeps abreast of new scientific methods and developments in the lighting and associated industries for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new programs.
Leading a group of talented researchers in a supervisory capacity - plans, develops, coordinates, and directs a number of significant and critical projects. This position requires a flexible individual, able to supervise projects and project teams as well as handle fluctuating work requirements, cycles of field and/or office work, and carry out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved cutting-edge techniques and procedures. Is expected to perform work resulting in the development of new or refined equipment, materials, processes, products, and/or scientific methods.
Highly skilled engineer conceives, plans, and conducts research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity. It is expected that this researcher will encounter problems that must be approached through a series of complete and conceptually related studies, are difficult to define, require unconventional or novel approaches, and require sophisticated research techniques.
This position will develop and evaluate plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others, develop proposals for funding and establish themselves as an industry leader in the lighting field.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Lead lighting based research for the evaluation of products, lighting performance, safety performance, environmental impact and human response,
- Manage Experimental processes, budgets, timeliness of deliverables,
- Oversee staff recruitment, screening, and debriefing,
-Guide, review and critique literature reviews,
-Develop, review, and critique reports and research plans,
-Conceptualize, develop, review, and critique work plans,
-Guide and oversee data analysis,
-Coordinate and contribute to composition of research reports and present research findings,
-Travel to research sites and professional conferences.
Directions given and received:
Receive instructions on group objectives, feedback on proposed research projects and plans, and project logistics. Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of engineers and technicians, estimates personnel needs, and schedules and assigns work to meet completion dates.

Required Qualifications:
-Doctorate/terminal degree with some experience. An exception may be granted for individuals with lesser degree and substantial related experience.
-Expert in transportation Human Factors with significant direct and relevant experience,
-A proven track record for obtaining funding and project implementations,
-Demonstrated experience leading a group of skilled engineers and technicians,
-Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills,
-Thorough understanding of experimental methods and statistics,
-The willingness to work in a fast-paced flexible research environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference given for transportation experience and strong statistical background.
