Lab Coordinator - Kinesiology and Applied Physiology

PAY GRADE: 29E

DEADLINE: Open until Filled

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction of Dr. Christopher Martens and Dr. Megan Wenner, the Laboratory Coordinator in Vascular Aging Laboratories will support investigations on vascular function and aging in humans. The Lab Coordinator is responsible for coordinating multiple human research studies. The Lab Coordinator will recruit and schedule human participants for research studies, assist with data acquisition and data management, processing and analysis of blood and tissue specimens, ordering and maintaining research equipment and general laboratory supplies, developing laboratory SOPs, preparing and submitting protocols, annual reviews, and adverse event reports to regulatory bodies (e.g., IRB, FDA, NIH etc.), and performing general laboratory upkeep and maintenance. The incumbent will maintain multiple databases including patient participant registries and freezer inventories. The Lab Coordinator will interact with faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, administrators and clinical staff across multiple departments within the University, as well as external vendors and other academic and industry collaborators.

Continuation of this 2-year position is contingent upon the future availability of funding.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees the recruitment of research participants through advertisements and interaction with clinical staff at local hospitals, clinics, memory care centers, etc.
  • Assists with screening and scheduling of research participants for ongoing research studies/data collections. Prepares essential materials for research participants and maintains open lines of communication. Coordinates the availability of investigators, core laboratories and clinical staff.
  • Monitors participant compliance to study restrictions and procedures.
  • Facilitates compliance with the informed consent process, as well as IRB policies and procedures, prepares documents for IRB review.
  • Assists with data acquisition and entry.
  • Implements and maintains an electronic data capture system to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance.
  • Manages record retention process.
  • Promotes and provides direction as it relates to workplace safety.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree with three years' related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in exercise science, applied physiology, kinesiology, or related field preferred.
  • Comfortable working with vulnerable research populations including individuals with memory impairment, dementia and other cognitive disorders and disabilities.
  • Ability to develop operating practices, assumes responsibility, and takes initiatives to perform tasks.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Intermediate computer skills including competency in spreadsheet and database software.
  • Experience with human subject research preferred (e.g., physiology, exercise science).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Position has frequent potential for occupational exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials
  • Requires a valid motor vehicle operator's license and access to private and reliable means of motor vehicle transportation for travel to and from hospitals/clinics.
  • Requires dexterity in handling delicate and/or hazardous materials.
