Senior Director of Development, College of Engineering

PAY GRADE: 33S

CONTEXT OF THE JOB

The University of Delaware is currently engaged in the most ambitious comprehensive capital campaign in its history. Due to the enormous success since the launch, the College of Engineering is on pace to achieve its $100 million goal. The Office of Development & Alumni Relations has a tremendous opportunity for a development professional to lead the College's major gift fundraising team while further expanding the individual donor base and providing the best opportunity to move the College from excellence to preeminence. Our preferred candidate will have significant individual major gift fundraising experience as well as demonstrated management success in leading successful development teams.

Serving as the College of Engineering's lead principal and major gift officer, the Senior Director of Development works in partnership with the Dean in securing individual major gifts in support of the College's strategic plan and manages a team of four (two major gift officers, an assistant director of donor relations, and an administrative assistant). In support of the bold presidential vision, in which the College of Engineering will play a crucial role, the College is preparing to embark on an ambitious, multiyear strategic growth plan that will transform its education, research and entrepreneurship landscape.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identifies, cultivates and solicits individual prospects for the College, with a focus on gifts of $100,000 or higher.
  • Engages the Dean, administrators, department chairs, and faculty, as necessary and appropriate, in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of principal and major gift prospects.
  • Manages pool of 150 prospects and makes 10 prospect visits per month.
  • Manages two major gift officers, an assistant director of donor relations, and an administrative assistant in fulfillment of development goals.
  • Plans, recommends, and carries out appropriate solicitation strategies both individually and within the COE development team; guides academic partners when needed within this context.
  • Leads the planning and execution of donor cultivation activities in the College.
  • Leads the coordination of stewardship reports and other donor relations activities for assigned prospects with appropriate academic partners within the College.
  • Provides stewardship and gift acknowledgment coordination for the College.
  • Must be aware of and prepared to assist where appropriate in the College's alumni, public relations, and career services activities.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of seven years fund raising job experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in major gift fund raising highly desirable, preferably in a university or college environment. Ability to develop and implement short-and-long-term goals and plans.
  • Experience supervising personnel with frontline fundraising responsibilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with prospects, donors, deans, and faculty. Ability to persuade and influence others.
  • Must possess strong self-motivation and skills for developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and work effectively within a diverse community. Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Proficiency with the use of personal computers and related software applications.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Must be able and willing to travel frequently throughout the assigned region as well as throughout the United States.
