Research Associate II

PAY GRADE: 29E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
The University of Delaware is an educational institution whose main mission is to teach both at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In technical fields, such as proteomics, one of the best ways to train scientists is to direct them on independent research projects of scientific and practical significance. Our University is engaged in a large number of research projects funded by government and industrial agencies. The involvement of training and working alongside these scientists is at the heart of the University's ability to do cutting edge research.

Under the general direction, the Research Associate II performs experiments to study and research changes in protein expression levels. The Research Associate II will use a wide range of biochemical, molecular biology, cell culture, and related techniques and skills as well as maintain a notebook describing experimental procedures and results. The incumbent will also be expected to facilitate experimental design, sample preparation, data acquisition and analysis and will help draft and write manuscripts for publication.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conducts, plans, designs, performs, and oversees experiments on proteomics related to human health and biomanufacturing applications.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data; prepares narrative reports and/or graphs.
  • Works with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and technical staff to ensure effective experimental research and safety of the laboratory.
  • Performs research assignments involving a number of variables and applies or uses scientific procedures, laboratory equipment, and computer technology.
  • Receives and carries out instructions on specific assignment objectives, advances the objectives, and obtains possible solutions.
  • Maintains confidentiality around sensitive data, intellectual property, and materials related to projects, including protection of this information from labmates as appropriate.
  • Maintains laboratory notebooks and databases, inventories, and orders in accordance with established policies.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, or related discipline and three years of relevant laboratory experiences, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An understanding of biochemistry, cell biology, analytical chemistry, and mass spectrometry.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of general laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
  • Extraordinary attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and procedures.
  • General understanding of research objectives and proper lab notebook maintenance.
  • Computer proficiency and willingness to conduct data management.
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Motivation to learn new techniques, flexibility.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to work various and sometimes long hours due to the timing on experiments, including possibly weekends and evenings.
