Scientific Glassblower

PAY GRADE: 28N

DEADLINE: Open until Filled

CONTEXT OF JOB:

Under limited supervision, performs precision glassblowing and related work for research and teaching units within the Department. The principal emphasis is on designing, constructing, installing, repairing and modifying precision glassware equipment, requiring familiarity with a broad range of technical procedures and equipment. A high level of independent judgment is required for the complete performance of a project from the design stage to assembly and installation.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design, fabricate and repair precision scientific glassware equipment at the highest appropriate quality standards.
  • Consult with students, faculty, and staff regarding design, material, function and safety of scientific glassware.
  • As appropriate, prepare 3D models, schematics and/or drawings using software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc. for reviewing projects with students, faculty and/or staff.
  • Perform precision glassware construction and repair using equipment related to glassware production and testing such as lathe, annealing oven, lapping machine, cut-off wheel, wet sander, torches, polariscope, and vacuum pumps/leak testers.
  • Instruct students and researchers in standard safety procedures for handling glassware and for operating glass apparatus systems.
  • Maintain, and when possible, repair shop equipment.
  • Manage glass shop budget to maintain sufficient shop inventory to properly support uninterrupted operation of the shop and the needs of the department.
  • Advise supervisor of glass shop needs.
  • Establish and oversee safety standards in the use of equipment in the work area.
  • Maintain a current understanding of trends and advances in glass technology; develop new skill sets as needed to address changing needs in the Department.
  • Prepare necessary records to ensure proper distribution of glass shop user costs.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associates degree in Scientific Glassblowing with two years' experience with technical or scientific glass production, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Computer proficiency with ability to access, interpret and apply standard operational procedures.
  • Diligent and detail-oriented to properly clean, sterilize and account for glass items.
  • Mathematical skills.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory cleanliness to minimize the risk to health and contamination of equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.

Must pass a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
