Position Summary:
The Industrial Design Program in the School of Architecture + Design, College of Architecture and Urban Studies, seeks a motivated and engaged colleague to join the faculty, as a tenure-track, academic year, assistant professor beginning Fall Semester of 2018. The primary responsibility for this position is to balance teaching with developing an externally recognized research agenda. Virginia Tech's Industrial Design is an accredited undergraduate program (BS. IDS ). Each semester faculty are required to teach a design studio and other courses across the Industrial Design curriculum. You will have an opportunity to not only evolve but possibly redefine the design curriculum that will excel in the changing world context. The ideal candidate will combine a passion for teaching with in-depth research interests through projects in studio and beyond.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area and/or the Creativity and Innovation Strategic Growth Area. The Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area is focused on bringing visionary humanists and technologists together to create the framework for infrastructure innovation and the reinvention of community. The Creativity and Innovation Strategic Growth Area is focused on empowering partners and stakeholders to collaborate on creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship efforts that transcend disciplinary boundaries. The Industrial Design program takes pride in a design tradition that promotes theory and practice as equally critical components of an industrial design identity which emphasizes collaborative and project-based learning, individual student development, and culminates in a senior thesis. Required Qualifications:
A terminal degree in Industrial Design (MA, MS, MFA , MID ), or related field, is required. Candidates should demonstrate an excellent body of work in design, as well as experience in teaching design studio and other courses across the Industrial Design curriculum. Successful candidates should demonstrate a teaching style that effectively integrates the learning experience of the design studio with the program's growing initiatives in areas such as interdisciplinary/collaborative product development, research-based design education, interaction design, strategic design, sustainability, and advance manufacturing techniques. Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary teaching and/or research in areas that align with Virginia Tech's university-wide, multi-disciplinary focus on the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area and the Creativity and Innovation Strategic Growth Area.
