Extension Technician, 4-H & ANR - Highland & Bath County

Position Summary:
4-H Youth Development: The Highland and Bath 4-H programs seek an individual to work with the Highland-Bath 4-H Agent, youth, adults, families and community resources to deliver and evaluate 4-H educational programs designed to teach life skills to children and families. Programs will include educational activities, contests, day and overnight camps, teams and field trips in support of the 4-H program, with special emphasis on Cloverbud programs, school and community gardening partnerships, STEM enrichment and other out-of-school 4-H enrichment programming. Work will include a collaboration with the Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development, to provide training and management for volunteers. Individual will be responsible for work to support 4-H fundraising.
Animal and Natural Resources: This portion of the position is a field and office assistant to the Animal and Natural Resources ( ANR ) Agent or programming currently in place in the absences of the ANR Agent. The candidate will be responsible for job duties assigned by the ANR Agent or to continue annual needed programs run by the local ANR agent which includes but is not limited to: Virginia Quality Assured ( VQA ) beef program, County Invasive Plant Control program, work with Sheep and Wool Producers and Highland-Bath Cattle Association, assist with 4-H/ FFA Youth Livestock Show and YMQA training. The majority of winter and early spring work will be office based, in preparation for late spring, summer and fall field-based duties (farm visits, assist field days, etc.)
Must be willing to work in both locales, servicing audiences in both counties as the position is 50/50 paid by both county governments. Must be willing to adhere to the Virginia Cooperative Extension Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity Compliance Program. Part-Time, on a flexible schedule, not to exceed 1500 hours per year. Office hours are determinate upon work needed for preparation and implementation of each program, 4-H or ANR . Will be responsible for working with unit staff to ensure office coverage. Some evening and weekend work required. Infrequent overnight travel may be required. Possession of valid driver's license required. Employee must be responsible for transportation to work sites and eligible for travel reimbursement.

Required Qualifications:
BS degree or a combination of education and applicable experience. Knowledge and/or experience in working with children and adults in an educational setting.
Possession of a valid driver's license required.
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other professionals and volunteers.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to effectively multitask.
Adept at working in groups and with others
Friendly, customer service oriented attitude
Familiarity with standard computer software such as Microsoft Office programs. Must be willing to master new educational technology as it develops.

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate from accredited university/college with B.A. or B.S. degree preferred. Extensive experience preferably in education, behavioral sciences, social work, agricultural education, animal and poultry sciences, family and consumer science or related fields. Knowledge of the 4-H program desirable. Experience in education and managing volunteers desired.
Preference will be given to those applicants with BQA chute-side training and or VA pesticide certification.
