Overview
The Communications Specialist will work with several academic departments within the School of Engineering and Applied Science to improve the written content of the departments' websites and newsletters. A component of the work will consist of hands-on writing and editing, while another component will focus on guiding content strategy and work flows. For example, the Specialist will help promote effective writing and timely updates by faculty and students who update their own content. Editorial responsibilities include writing brief news and feature items about awards and other accomplishments, as well as analyzing and recommending improvements to the static text throughout the sites. The Communications Specialist must be capable of conveying technical information to a scientifically literate but non-specialist audience. Candidate must be extremely well organized, exhibit exceptional attention to detail and be able to troubleshoot and multitask. This is a two-year term position with the possibility of renewal.
Responsibilities
Content generation and curation: Report and write news items and other web content. Coordinate with the Office of Engineering Communications on the assignment, use and dissemination of longer research news and feature items. Monitor SEAS and departmental sites for related content and adapt and post to departmental sites as appropriate.
Content strategy: Evaluate the departments' inventory of existing content. Benchmark peer websites, newsletters and social media. Work with department chair and staff to create work flows that efficiently harness faculty- and student-generated content and other sources of content.
Project Management: Oversee print and email publications (via platforms such as MailChimp), arrange photography and attend photo shoots to enhance web content.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree and at least four years of revelvant experience
A strong background in journalistic writing and editing, particularly translating technical topics for a broad audience Experience working with designers and photographers Strong organizational and project management skills Excellent interpersonal skills and communications habits Agility with web content management systems Agility with Photoshop
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in higher education communications, particularly in developing content strategies and improving work flows Familiarity with science and engineering disciplines Familiarity and comfort with basic web coding
