Desktop Support Technician

Position Summary:
The Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology at Virginia Tech seek applicants for a desktop support technician to provide end user support as well as basic server administration. The diverse environment includes research computing laboratories with a mixture of wireless and embedded devices, in addition to a typical production environment of Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops and laptops. US citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance are required for this position. This position reports to the Center's IT manager.

Required Qualifications:
- System administration experience using and managing Windows, MacOS and some linux desktop and laptop systems
- Experience troubleshooting software and hardware system errors
- Strong customer services skills with demonstrated prioritizing and time management, and ability to communicate technical issues easily to a wide audience with varying levels of IT knowledge
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to quickly solve problems in high-pressure situations
- Experience providing technical support and guidance in a pleasant and professional manner via email, in-person and by phone
- Experience managing IT systems for environments that conduct restricted research, and are subject to regulatory compliance

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with database administration and programming, including strong SQL skills
- Experience with PHP web application development
- Experience with automated deployment tools such as FOG or MDT
- Network administration experience, including configuration and maintenance of routers, switches, and firewalls
- Previous experience conducting IT system management in a university environment and working effectively with faculty, staff, and students
