Position Summary:
The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a senior faculty position (associate professor and higher) in electrical engineering, in the area of high-voltage, high-power electronic apparatus for grid applications. Future electronic energy systems are envisioned to supersede the existing grid infrastructure, utilizing high-power electronic energy routers in novel networks that could accommodate multiple types of energy sources, energy storage and loads, while operating in both AC and DC transmission and distribution modes. In order not only to cope with the trend, but to guide it instead, Virginia Tech is planning to establish a comprehensive academic research and education program in innovative electronic power system architectures, utilizing novel solid-state substations and electronic power flow control methods that enable improved power system integration, energy management, resilience, availability, security and energy efficiency. Areas of interest include: power electronics converters for high-voltage, high-power grid applications (e.g. HVDC and FACTS systems), electronic power transmission and distribution systems, and power electronics based integration of renewable energy.
The candidate is expected to be a leading contributor to the ongoing growth of the Center for Power Electronics Systems ( CPES ) and the Center for Power and Energy ( CPE ) in the vicinity of Washington, DC, and a major collaborator with the other centers and research groups within the department and the different colleges that compose the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area at Virginia Tech. The successful candidate will be expected to help establish and lead a globally-recognized funded-research program and laboratories, a specialized graduate curriculum, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in department, college, and university service and outreach activities, contributing vigorously towards the learning, discovery, and engagement missions of Virginia Tech.

Required Qualifications:
- An earned Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated experience in research, design, development, deployment, or testing of high-power electronic converters
- Demonstrated excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching, or evidence of high potential for such excellence
- Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary research and/or teaching in energy systems
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to articulate a coherent vision of research and scholarship in energy systems, and to identify potential funding sources to support such research

Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in leading large, interdisciplinary research and development projects
- Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines
- Interest or experience in mentoring students, both undergraduate or graduate, in research
- Interest or experience in working effectively with a diverse student population
