Position Summary:
The Department of Physics at Virginia Tech (www.phys.vt.edu) places a strong emphasis on teaching and learning, with introductory physics being of particular importance. To enhance this effort, the department will fill one non-tenure-track faculty position in the department, to start in Fall 2018. The appointment will be at the rank of Collegiate Assistant Professor with an initial 3-year appointment and the possibility of multi-year renewal upon successful review.
The Department of Physics has 32 tenure-track faculty and 3 Instructors in residence at the main, Blacksburg campus, with 351 undergraduate physics majors, and 82 graduate students. Research areas include astronomical sciences, biological physics, experimental condensed matter physics, experimental nuclear and particle physics, theoretical condensed matter physics, theoretical particle physics and string theory. The department has a long history of excellence in teaching. This past year it shared a University Exemplary Department award for effectiveness in teaching large lecture classes. Each semester the department teaches introductory calculus-based physics to about 2000 students, and introductory algebra-based physics to about 800 students.
We seek candidates who are passionate about teaching undergraduate students. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include
• Teaching introductory undergraduate courses,
• Organizing and directing a team of faculty and instructors teaching many sections of introductory physics,
• Organizing and directing the instruction (by graduate teaching assistants) of laboratory sections in both calculus-based and algebra-based introductory physics.
• Assuming significant responsibility for innovative curricular and instructional development in both the laboratory and lecture portions of these courses and taking a leadership role in training other faculty in these initiatives,
• Continuing to develop professional capabilities and participate in scholarly activities, including travel to and participation in professional conferences and societies, and participate in department, college, and university service and governance, as well as professional service.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field. Applicants must have a strong background in Physics; demonstrated experience with and commitment to teaching excellence in classroom and/or laboratory settings; a desire to advise and teach a student body that is diverse with respect to socio-economic status, interests, and abilities; and commitment/sensitivity to address issues of diversity in the university community.

Preferred Qualifications:
Desirable characteristics include a record of pedagogical achievement and vision, creativity, and leadership skills relevant to instruction. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated effective experience in working with teams of faculty to provide effective and innovative instruction, and a demonstrated commitment to expanding the diversity of the academic community.
