Applications received subsequent to the second consideration date (November 30, 2017) may not be given full consideration The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures ( DOL ) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Language and Applied Linguistics with the ability to teach at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish. The candidate should have a degree or concentration in the areas of SLA /Applied Linguistics/Language Pedagogy with a specialization in or record of academic publishing in foreign language proficiency. The position begins in Fall 2018 and candidate must have Ph.D. in hand prior to beginning teaching duties. The successful candidate will provide critical support in teaching, research and service to the DOL and interdisciplinary programs, including the new International Studies and Diplomacy ( ISD ) program. The candidate's home department will be the DOL . Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate classes in candidate's language of specialization, as well as content courses in English that contribute to foreign language proficiency and cultural competency requirements of the new ISD major. Coordinate departmental efforts to develop proficiency-oriented curricula across different language sections. Establish and maintain a solid research agenda; publish books and/or peer-reviewed scholarly manuscripts. Contribute through service to the missions of the DOL , the International Studies and Diplomacy program, the College and the University. Seek external funding where appropriate. Advise undergraduate and graduate students QUALIFICATIONS Required: 1. PhD in Applied Linguistics, SLA , foreign languages, or in a closely related field with Ph.D. in hand prior to the beginning of Fall 2018. 2. Native or near native fluency in the target language (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish) and in English. 3. Demonstrated record of proficiency-based foreign language instruction at the university level in a U.S. higher educational institution. 4. Demonstrated record of scholarly productivity in Applied Linguistics, SLA or foreign/second language pedagogy commensurate with experience. 5. Demonstrated evidence of teaching experience. 6. Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups Preferred: 1. Three years or more of experience teaching foreign languages at the post-secondary level. 2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching. 3. Evidence of experience coordinating language teaching faculty and/or curricula development according to assessment-based tools. 4. Demonstrated scholarly activities in the areas of language proficiency development or assessment. 5. Evidence of in-depth training or certification as a tester in an established proficiency metric such as ACTFL / CEFR or equivalent. 6. Demonstrated experience in identifying external funding sources and preparing successful grant-proposals. 7. Demonstrated experience with instructional technologies and course management systems for pedagogical, training, and assessment purposes.
