Position Summary:
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute ( VTTI ) seeks qualified ambitious researchers with a strong interest in human cognition and behavior combined with skills in quantitative analysis and modelling.
This position is expected to focus predominantly on driver support systems including autonomous driving systems ( ADS ). Research will include framing research questions based on a thorough understanding of existing theories and models, time series analysis of (often large sets of) driving data as well as statistical analysis/modelling. Another key topic is the development of simulation models for virtual testing of ADS , including mathematical driver models.
The candidate should be capable of working independently and with multidisciplinary teams to improve transportation safety through cutting-edge research. The candidate is also expected to take on project management roles and take active part in the development of the data analytics area at CTBS and VTTI in general, including the development of new project proposals.
Duties and responsibilities:
-Develop mathematical driver models for use in virtual testing of ADS and safety functions
-Conduct analytics on large data sets to answer safety-and human factors research questions, including time series data analysis as well as statistical modeling
-Develop methods and tools for quantitative safety/driver behavior analytics, primarily in the Matlab/Simulink environment
-Project management
-Interface directly with sponsors to understand requirements and deliver technical presentations
-Perform literature reviews
-Disseminate research findings through academic publications and presentations
Directions given and received:
-Independently performs most assignments with instructions on global objectives and general results expected.
-Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.
Appointment at the rank of Senior Research Associate will include additional experience in research leadership to include development and execution of programs.

Required Qualifications:
-M.S. degree in Engineering field, Cognitive Science or similar in lieu of degree exception for a lesser degree with significant related experience will be considered.
-Educational background in Engineering, Cognitive Science or similar
-A strong interest in human cognition/behavior and/or road safety analysis and modelling
-Demonstrated skills in quantitative data analysis
-Proficiency in Matlab or related tools
-Demonstrated academic writing skills
Appointment at the Senior Research Associate Rank: Ph.D. in Engineering field, Cognitive Science or similar with exception for a lesser degree with significant related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience in statistical analysis/modelling and machine learning
- Experience with vehicle systems, signal processing, and data analysis tools
- Programming skills (e.g., Java, C++)
- Ability to lead project teams and oversee project schedule, budgets, and deliverables
- Experience in database programming
