General Accounting Analyst

Position Summary:
The General Accounting Section of the Controller's Office supports the Banner Finance help line and provides training for new employees in the areas of Banner Finance navigation, general accounting query, and finance web reporting. The section also performs audits of departmental journal entry transfers and is responsible for Banner Finance daily batch updating, month-end close, and year-end close.
This position serves as the billing coordinator for the General Accounting Section of the Controller's Office. Responsibilities for this position include the following:
• Submitting weekly billing requests for capital outlay expenses incurred to bond trustees in order to ensure timely receipt of funds;
• Submitting semi-monthly appropriation billing request to the Department of Accounts and semi-monthly Hatch federal funds billing;
• Processing monthly billings to the Virginia Tech Foundation for Foundation funded capital outlay projects;
• Applying knowledge of basic bookkeeping and accounting principles and methods to complete various reconciliations and journal entries;
• Reconciling monthly capital outlay fund, various Banner Local Funds, deferred pay, and Banner/Cardinal reconciliations which includes appropriation and allotments, appropriations receivable, escrow interest, and Cardinal cash balances;
• Completing journal entries to include semi-monthly transfer of system revenue collections and withdrawals to/from the bond trustee,
• Posting appropriations and allotments, interest allocation entries, and various other journal entries as assigned;
• Daily activities including confirming the prior days Cardinal batch transmission and provide backup support for related positions as needed;
• Providing backup support for related positions as needed; and
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
• Demonstrated knowledge of basic bookkeeping, accounting principles and methods
• Proficient utilizing various computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail and databases
• Demonstrated data entry experience
• Ability to read, understand, and apply complex state and university policies and procedures
• Demonstrated ability to identify and determine source of discrepancies and resolve
• Demonstrated initiative to independently plan, organize and prioritize workload
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to provide customer service in a courteous manner and work effectively with diverse groups of people

Preferred Qualifications:
• Associate's degree in accounting or related field or equivalent level of training and/or experience
• Knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning ( ERP ) Finance systems such as Banner Finance
• Experience using automated workflow and imaging systems
• Knowledge of state or university accounting procedures
• Experience with query tools such as Microsoft Access or SAS
