Assistant Professor of Literacy Specialist


Brief Summary:

The Marist College Education Department seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor Faculty position. The start date for the position is no later than Fall 2018. Marist College is especially interested in receiving applications from members of under-represented groups. The Marist Education Department is a dynamic professional community that features a Faculty Collaborative Research Group for sharing work on scholarship, and that participates in invigorating cross-disciplinary initiatives, such as the discussion group on Creating an Inclusive Community and the newly developed Social Justice Research Center. The Department, a leader in the Mid-Hudson School Study Council that comprises the 110 school districts and 14 teacher preparation institutions in the region, is developing a Birth - grade two certification program to complement existing certification programs in elementary, secondary and special education. The Department has a record of success in establishing partnerships that promote employment opportunities for our graduates, including with the Hawaii Department of Education, the internationally known Anderson Center for Autism, Abilities First for Rehabilitation, and local and regional school districts and charter schools.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate instruction in P - 12 education methods for Literacy and supervision of students in field-based courses and student teaching. Non-instructional duties include student advisement and service to the college, department, and broader community. Relevant scholarly activity blending research with practice is expected. The successful candidate is also expected to participate enthusiastically in innovative programs.


Qualifications:

Requirements for the position include an earned Doctorate (ABD will be considered) from an accredited university with an emphasis in Literacy. The successful candidate will have teacher certification, a minimum of three years of teaching in P-12 settings where literacy is the focus, and experience with collaborative partnerships in diverse educational settings. The candidate should have an ability to integrate technology into instruction, and a commitment to alternative methods of program delivery including but not limited to online learning. Familiarity with clinical practice models and accreditation processes will be helpful. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in literacy education and experience teaching English Language Learners in bilingual or ESL programs. Additionally, preference will be given to applicants with a strong background in multiculturalism, under-represented groups, and integration of literacy across the curriculum. Proficiency in another language is a plus
