Laboratory Technician

Virginia Tech is a public land-grant university, committed to teaching and learning, research, and outreach to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world. Building on its motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve), Virginia Tech is dedicated to InclusiveVT-serving in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. We seek candidates who adopt and practice the Principles of Community, which are fundamental to our on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion, and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Position Summary:
The Ni laboratory in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech is looking for a responsible and well-organized laboratory technician who can independently oversee research activities within the laboratory as well as assist group members with their projects. Additional responsibilities include the maintenance of laboratory stocks, databases and inventory of laboratory supplies as well as the general organization of the laboratory.
The lab focuses on understanding how sensory systems regulate behavior and physiology homeostasis. We use Drosophila thermosensory systems to address this question, not only because of Drosophila fast and powerful molecular genetics, which permits easy manipulation of molecules and circuits, but also because of their thermosensory systems, which contain a relatively small number of receptor neurons yet govern robust behavioral responses. We combine a range of approaches, including molecular genetics, biochemistry, electrophysiology, calcium imaging and behavioral analyses. See the lab website (https://neuroscience.vt.edu/people/core-faculty/ni-lina.html) for more details.
The candidate will have the opportunity to co-author publications and, depending on their background and experience, craft their own research projects. Training and guidance and will be provided for those aspects of the job in which the candidate is lacking sufficient expertise.

Required Qualifications:
- BS degree in biology, biochemistry, neuroscience or a related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
- Working experience in research laboratory.
- Ability to manage time, organize data and keep accurate lab records.
- Ability to efficiently use computer software.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills.
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for science.
