Assistant Professor, Philosophy of Science

Position Summary:
The Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with specialization in Philosophy of Science, broadly construed. We seek a philosopher whose work genuinely engages with science and whose interests genuinely include ethical issues in science and technology. The successful candidate for this position will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum,
or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the Data and Decisions Destination Area. The Data and Decisions Destination Area is focused on advancing the human condition and society with better decisions through data. Faculty working together in this area are building toward integrating data analytics and decision sciences across the transdisciplinary research and curriculum efforts at Virginia Tech and beyond. -Development and maintenance of a nationally or internationally recognized research program in philosophy
-Participation in departmental, college, and university committees

Required Qualifications:
-Doctoral (or terminal) degree in philosophy completed by the time of appointment
-Evidence of excellence in research/scholarship (or evidence of potential for excellence in research/scholarship) in Philosophy of Science
-Ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research or scholarship
-Effective communication skills
-Evidence of excellence in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:
Willingness and ability to work in a high-tech environment, such as computer-aided instruction, distance learning, on-line courses
-Experience in working with students as academic or career advisor
-Interest and/or experience in mentoring students, both undergraduate or graduate, in research activities
-Interest and experience working effectively with a diverse student population
-Genuine interest in ethical issues in science and technology
-Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines
-Ability to identify potential funding sources to support research
