Director of MultiCultural Services, #017087

Summary of Department:
Multicultural Services (MCS) supports the mission of Bellevue College by providing culturally responsive support and services to students to help them with their curricular and co-curricular success as students. These services include but are not limited to academic support services, cultural programing and advocacy for traditionally underrepresented populations. The department goal is to promote and sustain strategies that close the equity gap, improve student retention and completion, and assist students with learning self-advocacy skill to navigate and overcome social, economic, and systemic barriers.   MCS works to achieve these goals by offering programs, resources and guidance that facilitates the transition to college for multicultural students and supports their progress through graduation. Teaching students leadership skills, self-advocacy and encouraging identity development is a service focus.  MCS builds connections to campus and community resources and provides students with guidance and support.

Summary and Definition of the Position:
The Director of Multicultural Services is the lead administrator and provides direct supervision for full-time, part-time and student workers. This is a full-time, exempt position responsible for providing administrative leadership, strategic program vision, high impact practice development, coordination and collaboration with other college departments and programs, budget allocation and program assessment.

Essential Functions/Typical Duties

5%-Organizational Strategy: Develop, implement and evaluate strategies that promote the department's student success strategies and align with the college and division goals.

Tasks include:

  • Use data and national best practices to make informed decisions and strategic plans for student success programming within the department and in collaboration with other Student Success Directors
  • Interpret and implement institutional policies, state and federal polices and regulations as they apply to the department
  • Maintain service equity for all students using department services
  • Perform program evaluations
  • Use a systems perspective to assess and respond to the culture of the department, needs of students and the community
  • Provide campus, division, department and student trainings as needed
  • Evaluate and implement college policies and department procedures
  • Consult as a department subject matter expert with college departments, as needed

20%-Resource Management: Manage resources, process, information and staff to fulfill the college and division goals.

Tasks include:

  • Supervise a diverse team of full-time, part-time and student workers
  • Participate in the college hiring process
  • Develop and direct resource assessment, planning, budgeting, acquisition and allocation process that are consistent with college policy
  • Manage change is ways that contribute to the long-term goals of the division
  • Develop a positive environment that supports pluralism, equity, innovation, teamwork and successful student outcomes
  • Ensure accountability and goal attainment for direct reports by providing support, guidance and evaluation
  • Create yearly department goals
  • Forecast resource needs for the department
  • Delegate tasks to supervisees
  • Use critical thinking and diplomacy to solve complex problems

20%-Communication and Collaboration: Collaborate with college and community stakeholders to implement college/departmental student success processes and communicate effectively.

Tasks include:

  • Provide feedback to the Dean on department operations, staffing and budget
  • Represent the college/department at National, State, regional functions and committees
  • Develop department recruiting and marketing material/website that clearly communicates the departments student success services
  • Facilitate shared problem solving and decision making
  • Disseminate and support college policies and student success strategies
  • Build and support networks and partnerships between students, faculty, staff and administration
  • Listen actively to understand, analyze and engage others
  • Work efficiently under pressure and adapt quickly to change
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and administration
  • Participate in outreach/recruitment activities for the college, division and department
  • Promote cross department collaborations
  • Prepare written reports
  • Facilitate cross-cultural communication between students, faculty and staff
  • Conduct educational workshops, presentations and other campus outreach as needed

10%-Leadership and Professionalism: Demonstrate transformational leadership, professionalism and a commitment to the college mission

Tasks include:

  • Create a vision for the department that aligns with the division and college goals
  • Value and promote equity, pluralism, inclusion and academic excellence
  • Support a student centered environment
  • Promote high standards of personal, organizational and department integrity and respect for others
  • Manage personal stress through self-care, adaptability, flexibility and balance
  • Promote continuing educational opportunities, participate in professional organizations and stay current in national best practices for student success
  • Participate in Student Success Team meetings and retreats
  • Support supervises in their desire to grow within the profession and continue their education

4%-Direct Student Service: Provide direct services to students

Tasks include:

  • Provide culturally competent case management services on an ongoing basis to a caseload of MCS students
  • Facilitate student groups and workshops
  • Provide support and direction to student groups
  • Maintain regularly updated case notes on students' progress
  • Facilitate student access to and participation in college and community resources that will enhance student success

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Education, Higher Educational Leadership or related social science fields, such as Psychology and Sociology OR equivalent combination of experience and credentials needed for successful fulfillment of the position responsibilities.
  • 1-3-year of progressively responsible professional experience in an administrative/leadership and supervisory position in Student Affairs at an institution of higher education
  • Experience developing and implementing student success programming that addresses closing the equity gap, student retention and completion, and multicultural student programming
