Laboratory Machinist

Position Summary:
Laboratory Machinist at the Center for Advanced Separation Technologies ( CAST ), housed in the Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering has responsibilities that include the use of all the machines commonly encountered in a first-rate machine shop as well as a wide range of materials including stainless steels, nickel alloys, brasses, copper and aluminum. The Machinist makes detailed suggestions in the design phase of the equipment and models; produces precision components by milling machines and lathes; produces larger scale items such as, heavy model supports, mezzanines, and mechanical systems; works with design modifications and has interaction with outside vendors to meet user specifications. The successful candidate must have strong communication and organizational skills that will enable coordination and interaction with students, faculty, and the public; should feel comfortable working outdoors, at industrial settings, and capable of operating and maintaining heavy lifting equipment, and be willing to travel to mine sites for extended periods of time.

Required Qualifications:
- Trade or vocational school education as Machinist or Machine Technician Certification or equivalent level of training and/or experience.
- Experience operating precision machine tools to close tolerances.
- Experience such as welding and soldering small parts, often with exotic materials.
- Knowledge and understanding of complex design and operation of lab models.
- Basic computer knowledge such as updating job queue system, and email.
- Knowledge of basic engineering principles and design, and experience such as maintaining and calibrating instruments.
- Strong communications skills and ability to work well with faculty, students and external vendors and contractors.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Trade school training in the use of lathes and milling machines.
- Experience with plumbing and welding.
- Associate Degree or equivalent experience in Machine Shop Technology.
