Energy Engineer

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Campus Energy Manager, the Energy Engineer will design and develop the energy retrofit projects for campus buildings to reduce energy costs and support University's sustainability and resource conservation objectives. Candidate will have an exceptional understanding of HVAC systems, compressed air system, refrigeration, lighting, building envelope and electrical systems in the buildings. The Energy Engineer will identify, evaluate and develop energy efficiency projects for a wide spectrum of buildings on campus including research laboratories, academic buildings, and athletic facilities. The candidate will have a thorough understanding of building mechanical and control systems and substantial experience in the field of energy efficiency upgrades and system optimization. The candidate will have the ability to perform measurement and verification of energy conservation projects to assure implemented projects are generating the projected energy savings. This position will support the University's Engineering Operations group on all campus-wide energy/water efficiency and retro-commissioning projects.
Additionally, this position includes a supervisory role over the Energy Auditor.

Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in mechanical or industrial engineering or Bachelor's degree in mechanical or industrial engineering and related professional experience equivalent to an advanced degree.
- Significant years or related experience in designing or operating building HVAC systems, energy systems, or in the field of energy engineering or energy management.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license and ability to receive VA PE license within one year of employment.
- Certified Energy Manager ( CEM ) by the Association of Energy Engineers.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC theory and applications for commercial buildings.
- Experience conducting field measurements and data logging on HVAC systems.
- Experience developing ECMs (energy conservation measures).
- Experience performing energy saving analysis using ASRAE simplified bin methods and spreadsheets.
- Experience using building energy. simulation tools such as eQuest, DOE -2, etc.
- Experience working with external contractors for project pricing.
- Familiarity with International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol ( IPMVP ) guidelines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in mechanical or industrial engineering.
- Considerable experience in Energy Performance Contracting for commercial buildings.
- TAB /Commissioning Certifications.
- Experience conducting ASRAE Level III (investment grade) energy audits for commercial buildings.
- Experience with building commissioning and retro-commissioning.
- Experience using building automation or scada systems such as, Siemens "Apogee", JCI "Metasys", Honeywell "EBI", Trane "Summit", etc.
- Experience supporting the implementation of ECMs during construction phase.
- Experience verifying energy savings using regression analysis or calibrated simulation.
- High level of proficiency using Microsoft Excel.
