The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut invites applications and nominations for a nine-month, Assistant Professor of English Education to begin August 2018. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department and is expected to advance a research agenda of distinction in English education. We are especially interested in applicants with a record of success working with pre-service English teachers and who are prepared to undertake a key role in leading and advancing our English teacher preparation programs, including accreditation and course development.

The Neag School of Education ( http://education.uconn.edu ) is ranked No. 27 among all graduate schools of education and No. 17 among public graduate schools of education in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report. The Neag School offers programs and courses on the main campus in Storrs and at the Hartford, Avery Point, and Waterbury campuses.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs of study for both pre-service and in-service educators. The primary focus of faculty is the preparation of leaders to serve all levels of education. EDCI is the primary department involved in the Neag School's nationally recognized and ranked pre-service teacher education program. According to U.S. News & World Report's 2018 rankings, two of our specialty programs rank among the top 20 in the U.S - special education and secondary teacher education. The quality and success of our teacher education programs were critical factors in the decision by Carnegie Corporation of New York to select UConn as one of the 11 partner institutions for the national Teachers for a New Era Project (TNE). The Department of Curriculum and Instruction has 30 full-time faculty.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in English education; conduct research and scholarly activities in areas of expertise; seek extramural funding to support scholarly activities (as appropriate); apply understanding of issues of diversity, equity and social justice to scholarship and teaching; advise students at all levels; work in collaboration with public school partners; and provide service to university and professional communities. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learners and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Completed doctorate in education, or related area, at time of appointment with an emphasis in English education or related area; and
• Classroom teaching experience at the middle or secondary level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Robust research agenda with an emerging record of scholarly publications;
• Evidence of or potential for participating in externally funded research projects;
• Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a range of English education stakeholders;
• Direct experiences in and/or commitment to supporting student learning in culturally and linguistically complex settings;
• Potential to contribute to the diverse theoretical orientations and research methodologies in the department;
• Knowledge of national and/or international trends in English teacher education reform;
• Success with developing field-based opportunities within the context of English teacher preparation;
• Capacity to engage in research projects involving multiple disciplines (e.g., multicultural education, human rights, education policy, psychometrics, etc.); and
• Commitment to literacy instruction that promotes social justice.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2018. The successful candidate's academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn's regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
