Position Summary:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is seeking a Superintendent for the Eastern Virginia Agriculture Research and Extension Center ( EVAREC ). The EVAREC is located about 50 miles east of Richmond near Warsaw, Virginia (https://www.arec.vaes.vt.edu/arec/eastern-virginia.html ). The primary missions of the center are support of small grains and soybean breeding programs. These and additional center programs are key sources of information locally and statewide for progressive wheat, barley, soybean, and corn producers. The center has 5 full-time research specialists and technicians, over 100 acres in plots, and at least 6 faculty from other units that conduct cooperative research at the EVAREC . Facilities include an office/processing building and several machine sheds. The superintendent is the administrative head of the Eastern Virginia Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The primary responsibility of the superintendent is to provide leadership and support for excellence in integrated research and Extension programs critical to profitability and sustainability of small grains and soybean breeding and related agricultural programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Specific responsibilities include: preparation and management of budgets; facilities management and coordination; daily management, evaluation, and recruitment of staff; liaison with college administration and faculty; and promotion of programs with local leaders and government agencies. The position is responsible for public relations and visibility of center programs. The superintendent will work closely with faculty from campus and other ARECs to develop strategic plans and execute research protocols for research and extension programs at the center, discuss work priorities with the center farm manager on a regular basis, and physically assist with field work during peak periods.

Required Qualifications:
-Master's degree in crop science or a related area.
-Agricultural research experience, including operation of farm equipment, is required.
-Evidence of strong professional leadership, communication, interpersonal and administrative skills are required.
-He/she must have the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels within the university, industry, and public sectors.
-Administrative experience with personnel and fiscal management is required.
-The successful candidate must also have a strong commitment to applied research, extension programming and the long-term sustainability of agriculture.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Previous administrative experience, including developing and implementing strategic plans, is valued.
-A PhD in an agricultural discipline, with preference to crop science or related area.
-Experience in obtaining extramural support from commodity and industry groups, governmental agencies and/Foundations is desirable.
