Associate Director of Facilities and Research Operations

Position Summary:
The Associate Director of Facilities and Research Operations, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of the Biocomplexity Institute of Virginia Tech, will serve as a critical member of the organization's senior management team and will be responsible for day-to-day facilities & lab operations and for project development/management on behalf of the institute, including programming, planning, and implementation of renovations or new construction projects. The associate director will advise senior leadership on issues related to the effective use and improvement of administrative spaces, conference spaces, research laboratory spaces, among others. This position will be responsible for the oversight of general and lab facility regulatory compliance management and for managing facilities and research operations staff members in their various roles and responsibilities - ensuring cooperative and collaborative interactions with research units of the institute. The associate director will also be responsible for operational oversight of the HPC data center's electro-mechanical systems and controls infrastructure, along with other critical systems supporting research operations.

Required Qualifications:
-Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
-Demonstrated knowledge of research-related equipment and physical facility needs.
-Working knowledge of and experience with Federal and State code requirements and permitting and safety regulations including OSHA .
-Significant experience with facilities management and facilities planning functions in a large business or institutional context.
-Demonstrated project management skills - overseeing the development and execution of large & small-scale facilities projects with commensurate budgetary resources.
-Demonstrated ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings and specifications.
-Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
-Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with diverse collaborative teams and various business and research unit personnel.
-Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage workload, to meet objectives, to adhere to deadlines, to make independent decisions, to deliver projects within budget,and to creatively solve problems in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Professional Engineering license in the state of Virginia, or the ability to achieve licensure within one year of hire.
-Experience with operations of biomedical/laboratory facilities, and general laboratory-facilities.
-Prior experience managing the operation of electro-mechanical systems and/or other special-purpose integrated systems.
-Familiarity with Computer Aided Design (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.).
-Familiarity with database program applications (MS Access, etc.).
-Experience with biological and/or chemical laboratory operations & regulatory compliance.
-Prior experience with Commonwealth of Virginia capital design and construction processes ( CPSM training or exposure).
-Prior experience with university business and facility management processes, with university procurement software, and with university health & safety programs.
