Senior Research Support Associate

Working at MIT offers opportunities, an environment, a culture - and benefits - that just aren't found together anywhere else. If you're curious, motivated, want to be part of a unique community, and help shape the future - then take a look at this opportunity.

SENIOR RESEARCH SUPPORT ASSOCIATE (CARBOHYDRATE BIOCHEMISTRY IN MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES), Civil and Environmental Engineering, to join a multidisciplinary group studying microbial communities. The research team specializes in studying how micro-scale microbial interactions impact the ability of microbes to colonize and degrade biopolymers such as chitin, alginate, cellulose, etc. Integrative systems biology approaches are used to quantify population dynamics and function and to construct models that capture the interplay between community assembly and function. Will assist with the production and quantification of hydrolysis byproducts using techniques such as FACE (fluorophore assisted carbohydrate electrophoresis) and HPLC, etc. Other tasks will include the manufacturing of biopolymer particles or the coating of surfaces using hydrogels, and using these techniques to help the team identify the mechanisms of cross-feeding between natural bacterial isolates found to coexist in the environment. The position involves working closely with the principal investigator, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students and offers an opportunity to learn new techniques such as microscopy or molecular biology.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED: a minimum of one year of bench research experience in molecular biology; proficiency in carbohydrate biochemistry assays (FACE, HPLC, thin layer chromatography, fluorescent labeling of oligosaccharides, production and purification of hydrolysis products, etc.); excellent oral and written communication skills; strong organizational and critical thinking skills; and ability to multitask and work with others needed. Seek a fast learner who is self-motivated and capable of independently executing, analyzing, and troubleshooting experiments. B.S. or M.S. in biology or related science field preferred. Job #15223-4

This a one year term position with possibility for extension.
