Job Summary The University of Kentucky invites applications for the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology of the College of Public Health. This position leads a multi-disciplinary academic department with 11 full-time primary faculty members who conduct research in a variety of sub-disciplines of epidemiology including cancer, aging, occupational/ environmental, infectious disease, genetic and social epidemiology, and substance use. In FY2017, department faculty garnered $1.9 million in primary research funding and $ 3.7 million in collaborative funding. Collaborative research funding with the other health sciences colleges on this land grant campus have been critical to the success of the faculty. Department faculty maintain a robust teaching agenda in the college s academic programs, which include the Master of Public Health ( MPH ), Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (PhD), and a college-wide Bachelor of Public Health ( BPH ) degree.
We seek a visionary chair to align and leverage the substantial scientific and educational expertise within the Department, College and University. The Department Chair requires administration, research/scholarship, teaching/mentoring, and service responsibilities. The incumbent must be able to provide academic and administrative leadership to the Department, guide curriculum development, coordinate faculty recruitment and advancement, teach and mentor students, be actively involved in extramurally funded research, provide and facilitate service/outreach to the public health community, serve on committees, and participate in official activities at the College and University. The Department Chair will demonstrate a broad understanding of the key content areas of the departmental faculty, develop a strategic plan for growing the department and strengthening its academic programs, and demonstrate a clear commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity. The selected individual will maintain an active research program with extramural support from NIH , CDC , health-related foundations, and/or other funding sources and will be involved in mentoring junior faculty. The successful candidate will increase the national visibility and strengthen the department s capabilities in translating and disseminating scientific evidence for use by public health practitioners and policy decision-makers in Kentucky and beyond.
The department seeks a chair who can support and promote the department s research and educational programs. The research infrastructure of the College is supported by a number of academic centers on campus, including: The National Cancer Institute-designated Markey Cancer Center, The Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, and the NIOSH -funded Southeast Center for Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention, Central Appalachian Regional Education and Research Center.
