Exhibition and Art Collection Curator

Title Position Reports To : University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian
JOB SUMMARY:
The Exhibition and Art Collection Curator will organize and oversee exhibitions in each of the University exhibition spaces, including all appropriate administrative, outreach, marketing and documentation functions.
The incumbent will be responsible for the stewardship, documentation and research, development and care of Adelphi University's permanent art collection. This responsibility includes the maintenance of the art collection catalog, safe storage of works, condition reporting and prioritization of conservation needs. The incumbent will ensure focused growth of the collection, through strategic acquisitions and will identify objects for deaccession that do not meet the standards of the collection. In addition, the curator will work closely with the Art department to foster experiential and professional learning opportunities for students.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES :
Management of the University Galleries, both on the Garden City campus and its satellite centers, which includes supervising the schedule, budget, employees (temporary exhibition installers and part-time student workers) and all attendant administrative tasks associated with gallery operations.
Monitor the exhibition-making process from conception to installation and de-installation; prepare exhibition checklists; generate and maintain schedules and timelines.
Liaise with the Art department in relation to exhibition programming and other programs.
Design, copy-edit and produce interpretive and promotional materials including wall didactics, brochures, educational guides, press releases, and content for websites and social media platforms.
Plan and organize events (eg. Lectures, discussions, alumni relations, programs) related to the art collection and exhibitions.
Train staff.
Maintain accurate records and documentation pertaining to the art collection and its history. Stay current regarding laws and best practices associated with the objects in the collection.
Assist researchers requesting access to the art collection
Deal with enquiries from researchers, artists and the university community
Assist with marketing and fundraising efforts
Manage budget associated with the art collection
Launch and maintain a content management system, documenting the University Art collection.
Care for Adelphi University's Permanent Art Collection including maintenance and cataloging
Develop policies pertaining to the maintenance, development, exhibition and preservation/conservation of the art collection
Research and promote the art collection
Propose acquisitions and items for deaccessioning
Develop and deliver experiential learning opportunities for AU students
Grant writing related to the support and care of the collection
REQUIREMENTS:
Deep working knowledge of exhibition design, installation, presentation and care of artwork.
Demonstrated knowledge of current standards and best practices for exhibitions and collection management
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Must be able to perform all physical duties associated with the reception, packing and installation of artwork. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. minimum.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
Master's degree preferred or equivalent experience in gallery or museum administration and/or exhibition installation.
Experience in a museum or gallery setting with demonstrable knowledge of current issues in curatorial practices as related to acquisitions, management and conservation; the ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of stakeholders; and excellent communication skills.
