Elementary Education - Assistant Professor

The Department of Teaching & Learning, Darden College of Education, of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Elementary Education, beginning July 25, 2018. We invite candidates from all backgrounds to apply, and we want to encourage candidates from under-represented backgrounds to apply who can add to the diversity and excellence in our Department through research, teaching and service.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include: (a) producing scholarly research related to elementary education; (b) teaching and developing undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level courses that focus on elementary education; contributing to design and enactment of the elementary education program and working with local pre-K-6 schools; (d) conducting and seeking external funding to support scholarly activities; (e) teaching face-to-face and distance learning courses, while developing multi-format delivery of courses; (f) mentoring/advising students in education; (g) providing supervision for students in clinical experiences; and (h) engaging in institutional and professional service.

Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities
Successful candidates must have:
• a minimum of three years of prior teaching experience in elementary schools;
• evidence of quality university teaching appropriate to the rank of assistant professor; and
• evidence of quality for research and scholarly activities.

Minimum Qualifications - Education or training
An earned doctorate in elementary education or related field by August 2018

Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification

Preferred Qualifications
• Scholarly and instructional expertise and ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: multicultural education, social justice education, curriculum history and theory, teacher education, foundations of education, classroom management, diversity in education and assessment;
• Experience in working with urban high poverty and Title One schools;
• Experience with school-university partnerships;
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and school-based personnel;
• Experience in teaching blended or online classes as well as face-to-face classes;
• A commitment to working in an interdisciplinary teaching and learning environment;
• Background in and willingness to assume a leadership role at the local, state, and/or national/international levels;
• Experience or knowledge of NCATE / CAEP or related accrediting bodies; and
• Record of or potential for seeking external funding and participating in research and school-based projects.
