Professional Lecturer of Fashion Design


Brief Summary:

The Fashion Program at Marist College and the School of Communications and the Arts invite applications for a full time Professional Lecturer in Fashion Design commencing in fall 2018.


Duties and Responsibilities:

This teaching position is studio-intensive, with a high number of contact hours of instruction in Senior Collection development, levels 1 and 2, for two-three course sections each semester, as well as one-two technical, digital or other fashion-related course each semester. Teaching load totals 4 courses per semester.


Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have five years industry experience in their area of expertise, and preferably some teaching experience. A Master's degree is preferred, but candidates with Bachelor's degrees and extensive industry experience will be considered. Ideal candidate possesses:

  • Extensive knowledge of creative and technical fashion design - from initial creative concept through patternmaking, draping, garment construction, and fitting for all garment categories; Basic garments through tailored sportswear. In addition to women's wear, knowledge of menswear, active wear and other specialty markets will make the position candidate more appealing.
  • Strong motivation to teach professional design collection development to Fashion Program students.
  • Additional strength of experience in fashion technology such as PLM software, digital patternmaking, and new advances impacting the fashion industry, as well as other fashion skill sets such as trend forecasting, product development, merchandising, will be highly regarded.
  • Archival and/or fashion gallery experience a plus.
  • Deep collaborative spirit to work with other department faculty on cross-pollination of design coursework, curriculum evolution and new program initiatives.
  • Ability to create a positive learning and working studio environment while managing students, achieving course goals, and assessing course outcomes.
  • Ability to work well with students in providing technical expertise and mentoring them in design development and construction of creative designs for capstone/thesis development or runway presentation.
  • Ability to operate and evaluate professional sewing and pressing equipment, and make recommendations of studio needs to program director.
  • Expertise in textiles and textile design.
  • Maintain a studio's professional atmosphere in regard to organization, tidiness, and professional atmosphere.
  • Keep program studio manager apprised of equipment servicing needs, supply needs and organizational requests.
  • Research and propose new equipment in studios when needed.
  • Collaborate with studio manager in training and utilization of student workers and teaching assistants.
  • Supplemental work in runway event production, mentoring student competition entries and other activities in collaboration with other program faculty.
