Compliance Safety Officer

Position Summary:
The Compliance Safety Officer provides professional assistance to the Virginia Tech Environmental Health and Safety Office in monitoring and coordinating a comprehensive health and safety program with VTCRI operations in accordance with federal, state, local and granting agencies requirements. The position ensures safe laboratory operations through education and the annual inspection process. The person will be responsible for the development and administration of the Lab Safety, chemical waste and biohazardous waste program, fume hood and safety shower programs, including interpretation of regulations, development and implementation of programs, and promotion/enforcement of policy. They will oversee the Safety Management System use, assist new labs in setup, periodically review lab profiles to ensure information is up-to-date. Interact with PI and personnel to put in place all required documents/etc. Review hazards/waste collection needs of new spaces including service rooms like Flow Cytometry. They will identify and coordinate with clinical research labs to meet requirements. Assist with waste collection procedures. Facilitate reviews of ECP and spill procedures. Oversee labs to make sure training is complete. They will be responsible for setting up classroom training including reserving rooms and assisting with pre-class registrations for laser training, toxin due diligence training, TBMH fall orientation, SURF Summer orientation. Assist with information dissemination on various issues after interacting with EHS responsible person/program such as MTAs, BI Sequencing, Lab coats, Training, PPE , and Toxins.

Required Qualifications:
-Advanced degree with emphasis in science or engineering or training and experience equivalent to an advanced degree.
-Considerable experience with a wide variety of multidisciplinary labs.
-Working knowledge of the Laboratory Safety Standard, OSHA , EPA , and DOT regulations;
-Demonstrated effective communication skills;
-Ability to safely move and handle up to 50 pounds;
-Good knowledge of computers and software (such as data entry/recording, word processing, etc.);
-Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Safety experience in an academic environment.
-Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus.
-Chemical Hygiene Officer certification.
