Research Analyst

Position Summary:
Virginia Tech is looking for an experienced professional for the position of Research Analyst with the Institutional Research (IR) function in the Office of Academic Decision Support ( ADS ). ADS facilitates a culture of continuous improvement in the university by developing systems and providing solutions and analyses to support strategic and operational decisions across all levels of the institution. The IR group has primary responsibility for state and federal reporting and plays a critical role in addressing burgeoning issues of institutional accountability.
The Research Analyst supports these responsibilities through the following essential functions:
• Gather, prepare, and submit institutional data on behalf of the university to state and federal agencies, national and regional organizations
• Process point-in-time census files for students, faculty, and staff on which internal and external reporting depend
• Respond to cyclical reporting needs and ad hoc requests for institutional data from internal units and external constituents
• Benchmark university data against similar metrics from other institutions
• Collaborate on data gathering, curating, and analyses with other functions of Academic Decision Support, including the University DataCommons

Required Qualifications:
• A Master's degree in a related field or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with significant experience that may equate to a Master's degree.
Successful candidate must have demonstrated experience with the following:
• Experience in data collection, processing, integration, and management
• Experience in statistical analysis
• Proficiency with SAS or other statistical analysis software
• Experience with relational databases
• Solid experience with Excel or other spreadsheet software
• Excellent communication skills
• Immaculate attention to detail
• Ability to work as part of a close-knit team and maintain composure in a deadline-driven, high-change environment

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to the following:
• Experience working in the higher education domain
• Experience with large national databases, such as IPEDS , for reporting and benchmarking
• Experience with SQL scripting
• Familiarity with the R programming language/environment
• Familiarity with data visualization software and techniques
