Music Librarian

The Music Librarian in the Department of Music is a casual position at Bucknell University that provides hourly wages for a regular schedule of work at times when the University is in full session and occasional hours as needed during term breaks and the summer. The Music Library contains approximately 7,500 scores and nearly 10,000 recordings. Additionally, some 7,500 books about music are located in the Bertrand Library.

Responsibilities of the Music Librarian fall into three main areas:

1. To be on duty in the Music Library on weekdays from 10:30 to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. (under normal circumstances) when the University is in full session and during Exam Week. Routine duties include assisting students and members of the department faculty in locating scores and recordings for lectures, classes, and for study, and to provide assistance to students in operating the equipment in the listening room.

2. To supervise the ordering, acquisition, and cataloging of new scores and recordings. The Librarian will, at regular intervals two or three times a year, solicit requests from the department faculty for new acquisitions and will initiate requisitions and orders following University purchasing procedures. The Librarian will coordinate the acquisitions budget with the Chair of the department, to whom the Librarian routinely reports. The Librarian has the additional responsibility of cataloging new recordings. (The University Library catalogs Scores.)

3. To supervise student librarians, usually four or five in number, who staff the library in the evenings and on weekends. The Librarian will, at the beginning of each semester, set up a student schedule and will undertake to hire additional student librarians as necessary with the assistance of the Office of Financial Aid.

Previous library or musical experience is required. Previous experience as a music librarian is preferred. All staff members are expected to contribute to Bucknell's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
