Staff Accountant/Analyst

The Staff Accountant/Analyst works as part of a team with the other members of the Finance Office and other university constituents in support of key accounting and finance-related activities. This position has an important role in the following areas: daily cash analyses and forecasting; asset and liability reconciliations and analytical reviews; review and processing of adjusting entries; and assistance with the preparation of certain financial, tax and other statutory or higher education industry reports and related supporting schedules. This position supports the overall current operational needs of the Finance team, and will contribute to the university's financial goals and strategies in an evolving technology, data rich environment.

Key Responsibilities
General accounting duties such as:

  • Journal entry preparation / review including those requests from end users;
  • Fixed asset accounting and account analyses;
  • Monthly accounting closings including journal entry preparation;
  • Monitor and review automated data feeds to the accounting systems.

Reconciliation and Analysis related to key activities to include:

  • Bank accounts;
  • General ledger (non-banking) such as payroll accounting, balance sheet accounts, student analysis, etc.;
  • Basic data analytics in support of monthly and year-end closings;
  • Investigation and resolution of unusual transactions and problems; .
  • Support Finance Office with analyses of revenues, expenses in a hierarchical account and cost center environment.

Support and Assist Key Finance Activities:

  • Preparation of supporting schedules / reconciliations for industry surveys, tax reporting, and other reporting requirements of the University. Such analyses include, but are not limited to, IPeds / HEDS, financial ratio analyses, tax-exempt informational returns, federal and state tax returns, defined contribution plan reporting, actuarially required census data such as post-retiree and health care liabilities, and state charitable registration filings.
  • Interim and year-end financial reporting including, but not limited to, annual financial compliance reporting for NCAA and EADA, generally accepted accounting principles reporting, federal grant reporting, and tax basis reporting.
  • Gathering information and preparing the schedules to support the University's fixed asset accounting
  • Assist with daily cash flows including, but not limited to, the reporting of cash transactions and confirmation of e-commerce on a daily basis.
  • University internal research and faculty awards.
  • Operational accounting of fixed asset records, depreciation, including construction/acquisitions in progress, quarterly reporting of fixed asset acquisitions/disposition to senior budget officials in the Finance and Facilities offices.
  • Oversight of Federal student loans and student aid programs, including Perkins Loans, the cash drawdown and reconciliation process.
  • Data gathering and analytics for external reporting.
  • Provide support to internal and external auditors by responding to data and documentation requests in accordance with auditor specifications.
  • Contribute significantly to supporting a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Assist the Finance Office in other financial operations areas as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration or similar field.
  • Minimum of two years accounting (or public accounting and auditing experience); preferably in complex not-for-profit organizations.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with University constituents in both written and oral forms.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of a Finance Office's role in a University setting including a focus on service and ability to work within a collaborative team environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

 

 

  • Aptitude in using sophisticated data mining and report writing tools in cloud-based systems.
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles as applied in a higher education setting.
