Assistant Professor - Computational Neuroscience
Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute
The Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute ( VTCRI ) in Roanoke, Virginia is recruiting an assistant professor for appointment in the institute's Computational Psychiatry Unit ( CPU ). The appointment will include tenure earning status in an appropriate department and College at Virginia Tech. Candidates should have a PhD degree and demonstrated achievements in the areas of artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, physics or engineering and will possess a passion for understanding how the computational functions of nervous systems develop and operate. The successful candidate will be highly interactive and broadly interested in the application of theoretical, computational, or engineering approaches to understanding human neural function. The position is focused on human neurobehavioral functioning, but could also interact with other model organism approaches being pursued at VTCRI . This is a particularly good opportunity for a theoretician or engineer to be involved in novel approaches to human neural function including state-of-the art neurochemical and magnetic recordings in human subjects. Colleagues at the VTCRI and CPU form a highly interactive group seeking new ways to understand human mental function, its derangement in disease and injury, and the computational principles underlying both.
The VTC Research Institute and the VTC School of Medicine form a campus in Roanoke that represents a successful public-private partnership between a leading research-intensive university - Virginia Tech - and a major health care system - Carilion Clinic. The research institute and medical school are located in the picturesque Roanoke Valley midway between Washington DC and Charlotte, NC. The VTCRI currently houses 25 independent research groups with over 300 research and support team members with over $75M in active extramural research funding, primarily from the NIH . Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate students to support their research program. VT has over 6000 graduate students, and offers graduate programs in many neuroscience-related disciplines, including the translational biology, medicine and health program ( TBMH ) as well as in engineering and the behavioral sciences.
