Job Summary:

Skidmore College's Religious Studies Department invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in American Religions beginning in the 2018-2019 academic year. The College is especially interested in candidates from under-represented groups as well as individuals who have experience with diverse populations who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and service. The candidate's teaching and scholarly interests should focus on one or more religious communities in the United States, with special consideration given to candidates with demonstrated interest in the interactions among and between religious communities. We have particular departmental needs in Latin American religions, Native American religions, Afro-Caribbean religions, African-American religions, Islam, and alternative religions and varieties of Christianity (Shakers, Mormons, etc.). In addition, the candidate should have interests and expertise in contemporary theoretical approaches, such as race and ethnicity studies, queer studies, media studies, ethics and social justice, ethnography, globalization or diaspora studies. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Religious Studies (or expected by May 2018) and will be able to teach core courses in the discipline, including Introduction to the Study of Religion, Theory and Method in the Study of Religion, and a Senior Seminar/Capstone course. Interdisciplinary program experience is also highly desirable.

Responsibilities: Skidmore is on a semester system with a normal teaching load of five courses per academic year. In addition to delivering the core courses above on a rotating basis, the candidate will also teach intermediate and advanced courses in their area of specialization. Periodic participation in the College's interdisciplinary First-Year Seminar program and active engagement in student advising, research, and mentoring is also required.
