RESPONSIBILITIES: John Tyler Community College is accepting applications for a twelve-month Professional Counselor to assist students with academic and career planning and provide services to students with disabilities. Candidates must possess knowledge of federal and state ADA policies as they relate to post-secondary education and the ability to interpret medical and mental health documentation to support the development of instructional accommodation plans as appropriate. Counselors coordinate and proctor quizzes, tests and exams for students who qualify for testing accommodations. Counselors work with professionals both internal and external to the College to arrange assistive technology and interpretive services as needed. Counselors interpret College placement tests, administer and interpret standardized assessment instruments of aptitude, ability, interest, personality, and career decision-making, and may also teach both traditional and on-line classes in College Student Success Skills, and participate in student recruitment activities. Counselors establish and maintain community resources for referrals for students for a variety of medical, behavioral, and mental health needs. Counselors confer regularly with faculty and academic administrators regarding the College's academic offerings and services and the needs of specific students. This position will require some regular evening hours and extended hours of work (day, evening, and weekend) during peak registration periods and at special college events. Counselors may be required to work on both the Midlothian and Chester campuses to provide coverage as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in counseling, psychology, counseling education, social work or related field required. Demonstrated knowledge of current ADA policies addressing postsecondary education required. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to manage multiple, competing priorities, strong analytical skills and excellent communication skills required. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check will be required.
PREFERRED: Current LPC, LCSW or other mental health licensure preferred. Experience working in higher education, particularly in counseling at a community college level, preferred. Experience in crisis management and response preferred. Knowledge of PeopleSoft and the VCCS SIS preferred.
