Position Summary
Michigan has a vibrant poultry industry with turkeys, layers, and broilers strongly represented within its commercial poultry production sector. Michigan ranks 6th nationally in egg production with over 15M layers in production creating a $625M impact on the state's economy. Turkey production accounts for a $100M economic impact with 6M birds produced annually. Broiler production is growing in the southern portion of the state. Current annual broiler production is 6.2M birds with growth predictions of a $34.5M industry during the next two years. The MSU Poultry Teaching and Research Center includes a modern laying hen unit containing aviaries including a robotic feeding system and buildings that can accommodate pullets and turkey, duck, and broiler research.

A full-time academic specialist is being recruited to organize, develop, and deliver educational programs and materials that reflect current issues facing the poultry industry Including nutrition, environment, health and wellbeing, physiology, products (meat and/or eggs), and economics. The candidate would be expected to work closely with the Michigan poultry industry, state and federal agencies, and other faculty and extension educators at MSU and in the region. The successful candidate will take a lead role to identify stakeholder needs, develop information, delivery strategies, organize and deliver extension programs, and to report on and evaluate program impacts. In addition, the individual will participate with the appropriate extension Work Team(s) and report against the team(s) Plan of Work. Further, the individual will organize and coordinate conferences and workshops on a state-wide basis, and assist with programming on a regional basis. The candidate will also work and develop extension deliverables with extension educators with responsibility to small flock producers.

The successful candidate is expected to be current on poultry production research and to facilitate, conduct, and participate in applied research on issues important to the poultry industry and deliver those results through the individual's extension program. The candidate will be expected to develop extramural support for their program.

This position carries a teaching assignment. The candidate will teach a yearly avian physiology course and an every-other-year poultry production and management course. The candidate will also advise the Avian Science Club and participate with the Midwest Poultry Consortium.

Candidates must be able to effectively instruct and communicate with students and stakeholders including those of different demographic, ethnic, gender, and cultural backgrounds; mentor students for their academic and career success; develop innovative instructional approaches to classroom teaching and outreach; and have a commitment to on-going professional development in the assignments.

Minimum Requirements
An advanced degree, M.S. or higher (preferred), in Animal or Poultry Science or a closely related field with strong training and background in the poultry industry. Expertise on current poultry production and management practice is strongly recommended. The successful candidate must be prepared to be an active member of an existing team of MSU faculty and staff, MSU Extension staff, and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development representatives as an interface in addressing Michigan poultry industry concerns.

Doctoral degree in Animal or Poultry Science or closely related field.
