Assistant Director of Student Governance

Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Student Governance serves as part of a team of professionals in the Department of Student Engagement & Campus Life, which provides education, guidance, and services to students and student organizations at Virginia Tech. The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Director are to advise the Student Government Association ( SGA ) and the Graduate Student Assembly ( GSA ). This including working with various organization committees, university policies, internal and external partners, budget oversight, and teaching and providing advocacy for the student leaders. The Assistant Director supervises two graduate assistants while also working to develop holistic training plans for all graduate assistants in the Engagement area. Additional opportunities will be provided for support of department-wide and campus-wide programs. The Assistant Director of Student Government Advising reports to the Associate Director of Student Engagement & Campus Life, Engagement.

Required Qualifications:
A collaborative and learning-centered professional with a Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs or related field is required by the start of appointment.
Previous experience in student affairs or higher education.
Demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, and inclusion.
Above average communications skills are essential, as well as, a desire to work in a teamwork focused environment, which includes colleagues, and students, with a positive attitude.
Evening and weekend work required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience working with student governance.
Demonstrated experience in facilitating leadership workshops and knowledge of leadership and student development theories.
Experience advising graduate students.
Proficiency with computer programs.
Budgetary oversight experience is highly desired.
